Human-Centered Design | Design Thinking

How would we... Create a design, collaboration and communication tool that fit intuitively and effortlessly into the PSU academic landscape? Fortunately, a robust, fully developed and simple system already exists. It is in use internationally, domestically and regionally. Human-Centered Design aka Design Thinking provides a turn-key process and language which, when deployed, enables and empowers inter-disciplinary communication across any discipline, any major, transcending and facilitating internal and external engagements and collaboration. "The stage is set, the curtain rises, we are ready to begin."

Join us as we apply the tool in exploring the design and development of a compelling and definitive First Year Seminar.

Collaborative Learning Spaces and Maker Courses
Collaborative Learning Spaces and Maker CoursesAn open discussion on their effectiveness for promoting multidisciplinary collaboration and community engagement

The Maker movement represents a logical extension or synthesis of current trends in education, including active learning, problem based learning, team-based learning, flipped classrooms, and community-service learning. A variety of on-going efforts to build cross-departmental, active learning environments for students at UMass Amherst will be presented. The objectives of this work include engaging students in applied research, building safe spaces for exploring diversity issues, facilitating multi-level peer-to-peer support structures, and promoting community engagement. Examples will include discussion of a variety of makerspace courses, departmental/University traditional Makerspaces, and a Town-Gown Makerspace. The opportunities as well as challenges of such activities for supporting student growth and educational effectiveness will be discussed with active involvement of the Plymouth State faculty strongly encouraged.

Promoting Authentic Learning through 21st Century Learning Conferences

Promoting Authentic Learning through 21st Century Learning Conferences

Schools increasingly face the challenge of connecting their curriculum to the real world through authentic learning and community partnerships. During this session, work with administrators from Nipmuc Regional High School in Upton, Massachusetts as they explain how they developed and implemented “21st Century Learning Conferences” as a means to connect their classrooms with the world beyond campus. 21st Century Learning Conferences provide students with opportunities to network with professionals, choose sessions of personal interest, and engage in meaningful learning experiences not traditionally found during the school day. The workshop will provide concrete strategies for faculty and staff members as PSU integrates community partnerships into programming at the university. Workshop participants will learn how to customize these conferences to meet the needs of their students, school, and community.

Attendees are encouraged to bring tablets or laptops in order to participate in the session. Presenters will have some iPads to provide to participants without devices.
